Day & Evening Boat Routes From Bollington Wharf


The following boats are available for day hire (9am to 5pm) and evening hire (May to September 6pm to 8pm) and are operated from Bollington Wharf, Grimshaw Lane, Bollington, Macclesfield, SK10 5NB. View availability and book online.

Heading North

Heading north from our base at Bollington Wharf on the Macclesfield Canal you’ll travel over Palmerston Street Aqueduct, passing Clarence Mill. Later on your left is the Cheshire Plain with views over to Manchester & the Mersey, whilst to the right is the beautiful moorland of Lyme Park. For nature lovers look out for variety of ducks, geese, moorhens, coots & herons. With a bit of luck you may spot kingfishers darting from the banks, a whole variety of migrating birds as well as birds of prey. Around Poynton look out for Red Deer. Journey Times are approximately 1hr to Adlington, 2 hrs to Poynton, 3 hrs to High Lane & 4 hrs to Marple. Places for a pub lunch on route include the Windmill at Whitley Green, Miners Arms at Adlington, The Boars Head at Higher Poynton, the Bulls Head at High Lane and the Ring o’Bells at Marple. Other points of interest or stop-offs include The Trading post or Coffee House both at Higher Poynton Serving hot drinks, ice-cream & sweets, parks for the kids canal-side at High Lane & Poynton Wide and the fabulous Chocolatier Simon Dunn in High Lane

Heading South

Heading south from Bollington you head towards Macclesfield, passing the dry dock as Kerridge and Kerridge Hill on your left & the Cheshire Plain on your right. There’s the wonderful architecture of the graceful “snake” or “horse-shoe” bridges of the Macclesfield Canal which are used for the towpath to cross sides of the canal. In Macclesfield you pass the old Puss in Boots Pub, opposite the iconic Hovis Mill (1 hr). Continuing to Gurnett Aqueduct (2hrs), which is a popular mooring spot in the Cheshire countryside with the fields full of lambs in the spring. At Gurnett there is 2 good pubs for a spot of lunch, the Kings Head (traditional pub below the aqueduct), whilst across the field is the wonderful Sutton Hall (ancestral home of the Lucan family) which serves top quality food & drinks. At Danes Moss there is a manual swing bridge to test your fitness & an adjoining picnic area, then an electrically operated swing bridge at Oakgrove (3hrs), finally after passing through the lovely wooded area of Fools Nook you’ll reach the end of your journey at Bosley Top Lock (4 hrs) where you’ll wind.

Training & Tuition

We give everyone a safety briefing & explanation of the features of the boat and can provide suggestions of routes & places to stop. We then give you professional tuition in handling and controlling the boat, once you are confident, we’ll leave you free to discover the beauty of the Macclesfield Canal
